AI Overviews

Google's AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of search results pages, synthesising answers from across the web before presenting any traditional blue links. For ecommerce, AI Overviews are reshaping product discovery, compressing organic click-through rates, and making the Google Merchant Center product feed the primary surface for retail visibility rather than the product page.

What it is

AI Overviews (formerly Search Generative Experience / Search Generative Experience (SGE)) are AI-generated answer blocks placed above organic results. When a user's query triggers an AI Overview, Google synthesises a multi-sentence response with expandable citations, then shows traditional links below.

AI Overviews is distinct from AI Mode (Google), Google's more intensive AI search product launched later, though the two share the same underlying models. AI Mode has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users (as-of 2026-Q2); AI Overviews has over 2.5 billion monthly active users (as-of Google I/O 2026, per [Google's official blog, 2026](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/search-io-2026/)).

Scale and coverage (as-of 2026-09-08)

Coverage estimates vary substantially by measurement methodology and query sample:

  • Digital Applied / Advanced Web Ranking: 48% of all Google searches trigger an AI Overview as of March 2026, up from 34.5% in December 2025 — via theStacc, 2026-07-10
  • Contently's Q1 2026 study of 21.9 million searches: 25.11% triggered an AI Overview — via Contently, 2026-04-27
  • Semrush analysis of 10M+ keywords (through late 2025): peaked at ~25% in July 2025, fell back to 15.69% by November 2025 — via [YouTube — AI Overviews 2026-09-08]

theStacc explicitly notes "measurement methodology affects the number." All sources agree the direction is upward.

For shopping queries specifically: Visibility Labs analysed 20.9 million shopping keywords (e.g. "weighted blanket," "blue T-shirts") and found AI Overviews appeared on 14.0% of shopping queries as of March 2026, up 5.6× from 2.1% in November 2025 (as-of 2026-03-18) — via Search Engine Land, 2026-03-18.

Informational queries trigger AI Overviews most (~39.4%); transactional queries trigger them less often (~10%), because Google recognises transactional users need to navigate to a store — via theStacc, 2026-07-10.

The Semrush finding that commercial intent queries grew from 8% to 18% of AI Overview appearances, and transactional from 2% to 14%, is from the Semrush 2025 study (published 2025-05-06) — via [YouTube — AI Overviews 2026-09-08]. Query-type mix may have shifted further since.

Impact on click-through rates (as-of 2026)

CTR impact figures span a wide range — likely explained by query type mix:

  • Seer Interactive (September 2025): organic CTR drops 61% (from 1.76% to 0.61%); paid CTR drops 68% (from 19.7% to 6.34%) — via theStacc, 2026-07-10
  • Ahrefs analysis of 300,000 keywords (2025): position-1 organic rankings lose 34.5% of CTR when AI Overviews appear — via theStacc, 2026-07-10
  • Ahrefs analysis of 863,000 keywords / 4 million AI Overview URLs (December 2025): average CTR reduction of 58% for top-ranking pages — via theStacc, 2026-07-10
  • Amsive across 700,000 keywords: average 15.49% CTR drop — via Search Engine Land, 2026
  • Amsive (February 2026): AI Overview CTR bottomed at 1.3% in December 2025, recovered to 2.4% in February 2026; pages cited inside an AI Overview receive more clicks than non-cited pages on the same SERP — via Search Engine Land, 2026

Seer and Ahrefs figures are from 2025 samples; ongoing measurement may differ.

Seer Interactive and Ahrefs underlying studies are from September and December 2025 respectively. 2026 conditions may differ.

Pew Research's behavioural study of 68,879 actual Google searches found users clicked a traditional result only 8% of the time when an AI Overview was present, compared to 15% without one — via Contently, 2026-04-27.

Approximately 83% of searches with an AI Overview end in no click at all, per Contently's synthesis of multiple independent studies — via Contently, 2026-04-27.

Semrush's study (2025-05-06) found that when the same keywords were measured before and after an AI Overview appeared, the zero-click rate fell from 33.75% to 31.53%, contradicting the standard traffic-loss framing. Semrush's methodology compares the same keyword set, while traffic-loss claims typically measure aggregate site traffic shifts that include keyword-mix changes — via [YouTube — AI Overviews 2026-09-08].

Zero-click search and organic traffic impact

Zero-Click Search — searches that end without any click to a website — reached 68% of all Google searches in early 2026 — via Search Engine Land, 2026.

SparkToro/Datos (2025) reported 60% of Google searches ended without a click, up from 58% in 2024 — via theStacc, 2026-07-10. This is the 2025 figure; the 2026 figure above (68%) is from a separate study.

AI Mode (Google) produces an even higher zero-click rate: 93% of searches end without a click when AI Mode is active — via theStacc, 2026-07-10.

For publishers, Define Media Group analysed 64 websites via Google Search Console: organic search clicks fell 42% against the pre-AI-Overviews baseline by Q4 2025 — a 16% initial drop after AI Overviews launched in mid-2024 was followed by accelerated decline after Google's May 2025 expansion — via Search Engine Land, 2026-03-12.

Go Fish Digital (March 2026) reports that zero-click is now "the default in enterprise retail," with organic sessions declining even when rankings look stable because decision-making increasingly happens inside the SERP before a click — via Go Fish Digital, 2026-03-11.

Citation dynamics

Only 38% of pages cited in AI Overviews also rank in the top 10 organic results, down from 76% seven months earlier — indicating Google now pulls citations from a much wider source pool than the traditional ranking list (as-of 2026-07-10) — via theStacc, 2026-07-10.

YouTube is the most-cited domain in AI Overviews (18.2% of citations outside the top 100 results), followed by Quora and Reddit — per Semrush (2025) — via theStacc, 2026-07-10.

YouTube/Quora/Reddit citation dominance data is from Semrush 2025 study; citation composition may have changed.

Only 1% of users click the citation links within AI Overviews (as-of 2026-07-10) — via theStacc, 2026-07-10.

Brands cited in AI Overviews earn 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks compared to uncited brands (Seer Interactive, 2025) — via theStacc, 2026-07-10.

Seer Interactive citation advantage data is from 2025; underlying rates may differ in 2026.

Pages not updated quarterly are 3× more likely to lose AI citations; content freshness is one of the top predictors of AI Overview citation retention (Semrush, 2025) — via theStacc, 2026-07-10.

A new Preferred Sources feature launched in 2026 allows users to choose websites they want to see more prominently, with subscription labels displayed — via Google Ads & Commerce Blog, 2026.

AI referral traffic quality

Despite lower click volumes, visitors arriving from AI search are reported to be higher quality:

  • AI search visitors are 4.4× as valuable as the average traditional organic visitor, and AI referral traffic is 3× as likely to convert as other channels — per Semrush analysis, via Contently, 2026-04-27.
  • Wix AI Search Lab: AI search visits grew 42.8% year over year — from 15.6 billion to 27.4 billion in Q1 2026 — while Google search visits rose only modestly — via Contently, 2026-04-27.
  • AI referral traffic accounts for 1.08% of all website traffic as of 2026, growing at roughly 1% month over month (as-of 2026-07-10) — via theStacc, 2026-07-10.

[!unverified] "AI traffic to US retail sites grew 393% year-over-year in Q1 and by December was up more than 1,150%" — via Search Engine Land guide, 2026. The guide page does not name the primary study; treat as directional only until source is confirmed.

LLM-sourced traffic to retail sites during November–December 2025 (holiday period) rose 693.4% versus the same period in 2024 — via elogic.co, 2025 holiday data.

Ecommerce-specific: product discovery

Search Engine Land (February 2026) reports AI search transforms product discovery from keyword matching to intent understanding — AI engines interpret conversational queries like "best running shoes for flat feet under $150" and surface specific recommendations rather than blue links — via Search Engine Land, 2026-02-11.

Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT Shopping, Amazon Rufus, and Perplexity do not pull from ranked pages — they pull from pages that answer questions clearly — per Gomega AI analysis — via Gomega AI, 2026.

For AI Shopping, product visibility depends on the quality and accuracy of the Google Merchant Center feed, not on domain authority — the product feed is becoming the primary surface, not the product page — via Search Engine Land, 2026.

Google Search currently hosts more than 50 billion product listings, with approximately 2 billion refreshed every hour — stated by Google CEO Sundar Pichai at NRF 2026, January 12 — via NRF Blog, 2026-01-12.

In January 2026, Google announced dozens of new product data attributes — including answers to common product questions, compatible accessories, and alternatives — that feed AI Overview product recommendations — via Gomega AI, 2026.

Retailers using Structured Data (product schema markup) typically see a 28–30% higher CTR in search results; structured data is described as "the bridge between product pages and AI answers, shopping features, and rich results" (as-of 2026) — via Product Lasso, 2026.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) are described as the organic disciplines that matter most for 2026 planning — brand content must be cited in AI-generated answers or it is "effectively absent" — via elogic.co, 2026.

Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) and agentic checkout

At NRF 2026 (January 12), Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), a native buy button directly on Google Search, AI Mode, and Gemini, developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart — via NRF Blog, 2026-01-12.

UCP-powered checkout rolled out in February 2026, allowing US shoppers to buy from Etsy and Wayfair directly within AI Mode in Search and the Gemini app, with Shopify, Target, and Walmart to follow — via Google Ads & Commerce Blog, 2026-02-11.

Google is testing a sponsored ad format in AI Mode to showcase retailers offering products surfaced in organic shopping recommendations, clearly marked "Sponsored" (as-of 2026-02-11) — via Google Ads & Commerce Blog, 2026-02-11.

Google introduced Direct Offers in AI Mode, allowing businesses to share tailored offers (price, loyalty benefits, product bundles) to shoppers at the point of purchase intent (as-of 2026-02-11) — via Google Ads & Commerce Blog, 2026-02-11.

Search Console reporting

Google launched dedicated Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console in June 2026, giving site owners visibility into AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions and clicks; rolled out worldwide as of 2026-08-31 — via Google Search Central Blog, 2026-06.

What practitioners report

Reddit and Apify unavailable in this environment (scheduled cloud run); practitioner signal is a gap for this harvest. Web and registry sources confirm that enterprise retailers are increasingly treating Google Merchant Center feed quality as a first-order SEO concern, with page-level signals becoming secondary for product discovery in AI search.
