iDEAL

iDEAL is the Netherlands' dominant online Account-to-Account (A2A) Payments|account-to-account payment method, letting customers pay directly from their bank accounts using their IBAN via a mobile app, their bank's website, or a QR code. Launched in 2005 and operated by Currence iDEAL B.V., it accounts for approximately 70–72% of all Dutch ecommerce transactions and is essential for any merchant targeting Dutch consumers. As of 2026, iDEAL is undergoing a phased rebranding and technical migration to Wero, the pan-European digital wallet operated by the EPI (European Payments Initiative)|European Payments Initiative (EPI).

How it works

iDEAL is an Account-to-Account (A2A) Payments|A2A bank-redirect method: the consumer selects iDEAL at checkout, is directed to their bank's authenticated environment (app or web), approves the payment, and is returned to the merchant. Settlement is instant; payments are irreversible — there is no chargeback mechanism. If a consumer pays in error they must contact the merchant directly. (primer.io/blog/netherlands-payment-methods)

iDEAL builds on SEPA rails, and some PSPs accept it for the initial subscription payment while simultaneously collecting bank details for recurring SEPA Direct Debit mandates. (primer.io/blog/netherlands-payment-methods)

iDEAL 2.0 — infrastructure upgrade (completed 2024)

iDEAL 2.0 replaced the legacy per-bank selection flow with:

  • Centralised iDEAL Payment Page — consumers no longer see a drop-down of banks; the new page handles bank routing.
  • iDEAL Hub — PSPs connect once to the Hub rather than separately to each individual bank.
  • iDEAL Profile (launched 15 April 2024) — consumers can store delivery details and preferred accounts via their bank app, enabling one-step order and payment completion. 50,000 profiles were created within the first two months. (iDEAL.nl, 2024-06-07)

The final compliance step required all merchants to remove their bank-selection list by 31 March 2025; Currence began monitoring and enforcing compliance from 1 April 2025. (iDEAL.nl, 2025-02-28)

Market position and scale

  • ~72% of Dutch ecommerce transactions (as-of Q3 2024–2025, Currence via EPI press release, 2025-10-27)
  • 1.5+ billion transactions annually (as-of 2025, EPI, 2025-10-27)
  • 3 million daily transactions (Adyen Knowledge Hub, undated)
  • 5+ billion lifetime transactions since 2005 (Adyen Knowledge Hub, undated)
  • ~350,000 merchant acceptance points (EPI, 2025-10-27)
  • ~90% consumer account coverage — ING Bank, Rabobank, and ABN AMRO cover approximately 26–29 million of 30–32 million Dutch current accounts (banking.vision, 2026-03-06)

Market share 71% vs 72%: Searchlab.nl (citing Currence 2025, published 2026-03-17) states 71% online market share. EPI's official October 2025 press release states "approximately 72% of all e-commerce transactions." Both figures are current; the difference is likely methodological (transaction count vs. value, or rounding). Sources: searchlab.nl vs epicompany.eu

Acceptance points 210,000–350,000 vs 350,000+: Banking.Vision (2026-03-06) cites "around 210,000 to 350,000 acceptance points"; EPI's October 2025 press release states "supported by over 350,000 businesses." Likely reflects different measurement dates or scope (active vs. total registered). Sources: banking.vision vs epicompany.eu

EPI acquisition

The EPI (European Payments Initiative)|European Payments Initiative completed its acquisition of iDEAL and Payconiq International on 31 October 2023. (iDEAL.nl, 2023-10-31)

Black Friday 2024 benchmark

  • Black Friday Week 2024: 56.82 million transactions — a record, up 12.31% year-on-year (iDEAL.nl, 2024-12-03)
  • Black Friday Day 2024: 5.82 million transactions, down 18.4% from 7.13 million on Black Friday Day 2023 — the first single-day year-on-year decline since 2016 (iDEAL.nl, 2024-11-30)

Black Friday 2024 — daily decline vs weekly record: iDEAL.nl reported both a single-day decline of 18.4% on Black Friday itself AND a record weekly total. These are consistent (shopping spread across more of the week), but the two press releases can be misread as contradictory. Sources: iDEAL.nl daily vs iDEAL.nl weekly

iDEAL → Wero transition (2026–2027)

The most significant iDEAL development as of 2026 is its phased migration to Wero, EPI (European Payments Initiative)|EPI's pan-European digital wallet already used by over 45 million Europeans.

Announcement

On 28 October 2025, iDEAL and EPI announced that iDEAL would begin rebranding to "iDEAL | Wero" in 2026, marking the first step in a gradual transition. The transition is in collaboration with ABN AMRO, ING, and Rabobank, with De Nederlandsche Bank (Dutch Central Bank) as supervisory authority. (iDEAL.nl, 2025-10-28; EPI, 2025-10-27)

Phase timeline (as-of 2026)

PhaseTimingWhat changes
Phase 1 — Co-branding29 Jan 2026 – 31 Mar 2026 (mandatory)iDEAL logo replaced by "iDEAL | Wero" in webshops, banking apps, and payment pages. Non-compliance may result in iDEAL deactivation.
Phase 2 — Technical migrationQ4 2026Dutch buyers can begin paying with Wero; Stripe recommends A/B testing Wero vs iDEAL in Dutch checkout. Wero available to Dutch consumers end of 2026.
Phase 3 — iDEAL shutdown2027–2028All merchants expected to cut over to Wero; Stripe recommends completing migration in 2027.

Merchant integration implications

Stripe-hosted integrations (Payment Element, Hosted Checkout, Hosted Invoices): co-branding updated automatically by Stripe; no merchant action required. Custom UI and API integrations: merchants must manually update logos and text. (Stripe Support migration guide)

Existing SEPA-backed subscriptions are unaffected: iDEAL-triggered recurring subscriptions run on SEPA Direct Debit rails and will not be disrupted if iDEAL is deactivated in checkout. Wero's own subscription mechanism launches in 2027. (Stripe Support migration guide)

BNPL wind-down: The iDEAL in3 BNPL|Buy Now Pay Later partnership will be phased out over 2025 because Wero's initial development phase does not support BNPL. (iDEAL.nl, 2025-07-31)

Wero and European expansion

Wero runs on SEPA Instant payment rails — account-to-account, real-time, funds available within 10 seconds. (banking.vision, 2026-03-06)

On 2 February 2026, EPI and the EuroPA Alliance signed a Memorandum of Understanding for interoperability. The planned combined footprint covers approximately 130 million users across 13+ countries, including Bizum (Spain), Bancomat (Italy), MB Way/SIBS (Portugal), Blik (Poland), IRIS (Greece), Vipps (Norway), MobilePay (Denmark/Finland), and Swish (Sweden). (banking.vision, 2026-03-06)

EPI plans to cover 16 European countries (first phase: 14 markets reaching ~84% of the EU + Norway + Andorra population). EPI is supported by 16 European banks and payment service providers, authorised by the National Bank of Belgium as a payment institution on 20 February 2024. (banking.vision, 2026-03-06; EPI, 2025-10-27)

EPI also intends to integrate the digital euro into the Wero wallet, with ECB cooperation described as crucial. (EPC, 2024-12-24)

Checkout and merchant implications

Why iDEAL cannot be omitted for Dutch merchants:

  • 13% of shoppers globally abandon checkout when their preferred payment method is unavailable (as-of 2025, Baymard Institute via searchlab.nl, 2026-03-17)
  • Only 4 in 10 Dutch people owned a credit card as of early 2024, and only 28% had actually used one — the Dutch strongly prefer debit and A2A methods (as-of early 2024, primer.io — stale_risk)
  • Cash usage has dropped to just 16% of all Dutch transactions (as-of 2025, ECB/DNB via searchlab.nl, 2026-03-17)

Payment method breadth and conversion:

  • Stores offering 5+ payment methods see on average 12% reduction in Checkout Abandonment (Adyen Global Payments Report via searchlab.nl, 2026-03-17)
  • Offering local payment methods per country increases conversion among international visitors by an average of 27% (Adyen Global Payments Report via searchlab.nl, 2026-03-17)

Cost comparison (as-of 2026):

  • iDEAL / Wero: ~0.7% of turnover
  • Visa / Mastercard: ~1–3%
  • PayPal: ~2.5–3.5%

(banking.vision, 2026-03-06 — vendor-cited; treat as directional, not precise)

Competitive Dutch checkout stack: iDEAL as primary; PayPal and cards for returning international customers. (searchlab.nl, 2026-03-17)
