VTEX IO
VTEX IO
VTEX IO is VTEX's cloud-native, low-code development platform for building enterprise ecommerce experiences. It handles infrastructure concerns (performance, scalability, security) so developers focus on application logic. VTEX IO underpins three distinct development surfaces: web storefronts (via Store Framework), custom Admin applications, and backend integrations exposing REST or GraphQL APIs.
Architecture
VTEX IO is API-first: VTEX exposes 750+ endpoints across 70+ microservices (as-of developers.vtex.com, PRIMARY). The platform uses a Builder system — each VTEX IO app declares which builder it depends on (Node, Dotnet, Store, React, GraphQL), and builders determine how source code is compiled and deployed.
Key architectural primitives:
- Workspaces — isolated environments for development, testing, and staging, keeping changes off the live store until promoted
- VTEX IO CLI — the primary development tool for linking local code to the platform, managing workspaces, and releasing app versions
- VBase — VTEX IO's embedded database solution (being deprecated — see Lifecycle section)
- Extensions Hub — the marketplace (formerly App Store) where IO apps are discovered, installed, and managed from within the VTEX Admin; includes App Store, Partners, and App Management
Store Framework (storefront layer)
Store Framework is the React-based storefront layer that runs on top of VTEX IO. Storefronts are composed from pre-built, configurable React "blocks" (components) and deployed as Progressive Web Apps (PWAs). TypeScript, React, GraphQL, and Node.js are the standard stack (developers.vtex.com, PRIMARY).
Store Framework is not the same as VTEX IO the platform: VTEX IO is the infrastructure; Store Framework is one use case running on it. This distinction matters for understanding the FastStore migration narrative.
FastStore — the successor storefront
FastStore is VTEX's newer, performance-first storefront framework built on Next.js, TypeScript, and GraphQL (Jamstack architecture). It is VTEX's recommended approach for new storefront builds from 2023 onwards, and was confirmed as strategic direction at VTEX Vision Spring 2024 (VTEX official YouTube, April 23, 2024).
Key relationship:
- VTEX IO the platform ≠ Store Framework the storefront ≠ FastStore
- FastStore runs on top of VTEX IO's underlying infrastructure via WebOps (the FastStore deployment/hosting layer)
- Store Framework is still supported but VTEX's storefront strategy centres on FastStore for new projects (e-Plus Agency, 2025-10-02; VTEX Vision 2024 keynote)
- As of May 2026, FastStore v4 is the current major version; FastStore v1 is no longer maintained (developers.vtex.com, PRIMARY)
Lifecycle management (as-of 2026-08-31)
VTEX IO introduced a formal Builder lifecycle system in March 2026, with statuses: Beta → Stable → Deprecated → Decommissioned → Non-functional (developers.vtex.com release note 2026-03-09, PRIMARY).
Current deprecation status:
| Component | Status | Effective date | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Node builder 3.x / 4.x | Decommissioned | 2026-03-09 | No new linking/publishing; apps run |
| Dotnet builder 0.x / 1.x | Decommissioned | 2026-03-09 | No new linking/publishing; apps run |
| GraphQL builder 1.x | Deprecated | 2025-09-30 | Use 2.x |
| Legacy IO apps (specific list) | End of official support | 2025-06-06 | Continue at own risk; no patches |
| VBase (IO database) | Deprecating | Feb 2027 → Oct 2027 | See below |
| Store Framework — overall | Active (individual components deprecated) | Ongoing | Delivery Promise components replaced Shipping Option components Apr 2026 |
VBase deprecation timeline (PRIMARY — developers.vtex.com, 2026-08-24):
- 2027-02-01: Deprecated — no new IO apps/major versions using VBase can be published
- 2027-07-01: Decommissioned — no new minor/patch versions
- 2027-10-01: Non-functional — apps using VBase cease to operate
- Exceptions: Payments, Antifraud, and Search integration apps are excluded from this timeline
- Migration path: replace VBase with Master Data CRUD API
Developer experience
VTEX IO targets developers familiar with TypeScript, React, GraphQL, and Node.js — skills transferable from general frontend development (developers.vtex.com, PRIMARY). Infrastructure management is abstracted: no server provisioning, automatic traffic-based scaling, continuous deployment via local-to-cloud workspace sync.
One recurring concern in practitioner commentary: VTEX IO customisations require strong developer involvement; marketing/content teams have limited autonomy without developer support. This creates operational dependency that can slow iteration cycles (e-Plus Agency, 2025-10-02; SoftwareFinder reviews 2025).
A vendor lock-in concern appears in review data: once deeply built on VTEX IO, "retailers are unable to pick up and move" without a full replatform (SoftwareFinder 2025 — vendor-unverified sample, treat as directional).
Ecosystem
VTEX IO supports:
- 6,000+ third-party IO extensions (as-of vtex.com/en/blog/product/vtex-io-enterprise-retail-companies/ — [PRE-2024] stale-risk on figure)
- 1,000 SIs and ISVs; 330 marketplaces; 180 payment solutions; 90 logistics companies connected via the ecosystem (same source — treat as directional, not current benchmark)
In April 2026, VTEX launched an AI Developer Toolkit including an MCP server for VTEX platform integration — signalling AI-native developer tooling being layered on top of IO infrastructure (developers.vtex.com, 2026-04-09, PRIMARY).

VTEX IO deprecation framing: VTEX's official documentation does not announce VTEX IO as deprecated as a platform — it remains active and documented with new features (AI Developer Toolkit, April 2026). However, partner agency e-Plus Agency (2025-10-02) frames IO Store Framework as having "reduced focus" at VTEX and characterises FastStore as "VTEX's core strategy for e-commerce evolution." The key distinction: VTEX IO the infrastructure platform continues; Store Framework the storefront approach is being succeeded by FastStore. These are compatible, not contradictory, once the platform/storefront distinction is made.
FastStore version naming: One search result described FastStore v3 as "the latest version"; the official VTEX release note from May 7, 2026 confirms FastStore v4 is current and required for new projects. The v3 language appears in outdated documentation pages not yet updated by VTEX. Trust the timestamped release note: v4 is current (as-of 2026-05-07).
