Broad Match
Broad Match
Broad match is Google Ads' default keyword match type, allowing ads to serve on searches that relate to the keyword's intent rather than its literal text. As of 2026, Google has substantially expanded what "related" means — matching is driven by user intent signals rather than keyword phrasing — making broad match the widest-reach and least restrictive match type. It is paired mandatorily with Smart Bidding to function efficiently, and is the only standard match type eligible to trigger ads inside Google AI Overviews (AIO).
How it works
Google Ads Help Center states that broad match "may show on searches that are related to your keyword, which can include searches that don't contain the direct meaning of your keywords," and that it is the default match type for all new keywords — no special syntax required. Google uses up to three additional signals beyond the keyword text to determine relevance at auction-time:

All three match types have moved toward intent-based matching over the past five years:

Google Ads Help Center states: "It's critical to use Smart Bidding with broad match. This is because every search query is different, and bids for each query should reflect the unique contextual signals present at auction-time." AI Overviews eligibility — structural reason for broad match importance
Search Engine Land reported (2025-12-16) that Exact Match and Phrase Match keywords are NOT eligible to trigger ads within Google AI Overviews (AIO); only broad match keywords (or keywordless targeting via AI Max for Search) can serve in AIO placements. September 2026: Auto-upgrade to AI Max

groas.com (2026-05-05) states that AI Max for Search — which reached general availability in early 2026 — "goes well beyond traditional broad match behavior," adding keywordless matching from landing page content, dynamic creative generation, and URL expansion. AI Max is also the successor to Dynamic Search Ads, which Google announced for retirement in 2026 in favour of AI Max. For ecommerce accounts (those tracking conversion value), Optmyzr's February 2026 data shows:
- Exact match leads on ROAS and CPA in ecommerce
- Phrase match posts the highest conversion rate of any match type in ecommerce — outperforming even exact match on that metric
- Broad match gains disproportionate spend share but does not lead on efficiency metrics in ecommerce accounts
For lead-gen accounts (without conversion value tracking), phrase match holds the largest share of both spend and conversions; broad match loses efficiency more noticeably than in ecommerce, as Smart Bidding has weaker signals without conversion value data.
