Serialisation

Serialisation is the process of assigning a unique identifier to each individual instance of a product unit, enabling that specific unit — not just the product type or SKU — to be tracked throughout its supply chain and product lifecycle. It is the data foundation underpinning Anti-Counterfeiting, Digital Product Passport (DPP) compliance, item-level Traceability, returns authentication, and targeted Recall Management.


How serialisation works

Serialisation vs. product identification

A GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) identifies a product type — all units of the same SKU share the same GTIN. Serialisation extends this to the instance level: the combination of a GTIN and a unique serial number identifies exactly one product unit. In GS1 notation this becomes an SGTIN (Serialised GTIN): the GTIN encoded alongside a serial number using Application Identifier 21 (alphanumeric, max 20 characters). GS1 identifier keys

GS1 defines two categories relevant to serialisation:

  • Keys with optional serialisation — the GTIN becomes an SGTIN when a serial number is added. Other keys in this category: GCN, GRAI, GDTI, CPID. (GS1 Support Portal, ibid)

EPCIS 2.0 — sharing serialised events

EPCIS (Electronic Product Code Information Services, GS1 standard) is the data exchange layer for serialised supply chain events. Each EPCIS event captures five dimensions: What (the serialised object), Where (location), When (timestamp), Why (business context), and How (sensor data — added in EPCIS 2.0, 2022). GS1 Sunrise 2027 and serialisation

GS1 Sunrise 2027 mandates that retail POS scanners can read 2D barcodes by end of 2027. Unit-level serialisation is NOT required for Sunrise compliance — the serial number is optional payload within a 2D code. However, GS1 Digital Link makes it technically straightforward to include an SGTIN in the same 2D code used for POS scanning, making Sunrise the practical deployment window for serialisation at scale. Use cases

Anti-counterfeiting

Serialisation enables authentication of individual units by verifying that a claimed serial number was legitimately manufactured and issued. Amazon Transparency is the largest commercial implementation: brands apply unique, non-sequential codes to every manufactured unit; Amazon scans codes at fulfilment centres and intercepts units that fail verification.
