Traceability

Traceability is the ability to identify, record, and retrieve the history, application, and location of a product or batch at any point in the supply chain — from raw material origin through manufacturing, logistics, retail, and post-sale. In ecommerce and retail, traceability enables recall management, regulatory compliance, consumer transparency, and fraud prevention. It is becoming a mandatory infrastructure layer as EU ESPR/DPP requirements and retailer private mandates take effect in 2026–2028.

Identification levels

The GS1 Global Traceability Standard (GTS) defines three levels of product identification (GS1, current standard):

Instance-level serialisation enables distinguishing individual products from one another and is particularly valuable for quality issues, food safety recalls, and high-value items (GS1, current standard).

GS1 EPCIS — the event data standard

EPCIS (Electronic Product Code Information Services) is GS1's flagship traceability event-sharing standard. It captures supply chain events using four core dimensions (GS1, EPCIS standard v2.0.0, published 2022-06-22):

  • What — GTIN, the product or batch
  • Where — GLN (Global Location Number), the facility or handoff point
  • When — timestamp of the event
  • Why — business step (e.g. shipping, receiving) and disposition (e.g. in transit, sellable)

EPCIS 2.0 additionally supports sensor data for condition monitoring (e.g. temperature, humidity) (GS1, 2022-06-22).

EPCIS 2.0 improvements

EPCIS 2.0 is a backward-compatible release that adds JSON/JSON-LD bindings and a RESTful API interface alongside the existing XML/SOAP approach, lowering integration barriers for modern ecommerce systems (GS1, 2022-06-22). It is also published as ISO/IEC 19987:2024 (GS1 via Tracex Technologies, undated). EPCIS 2.0's JSON-LD support is described as "particularly significant" for Digital Product Passport (DPP) systems because it provides a vendor-neutral, open-standard data format any system can produce and consume (MyProductPassport, undated).

EPCIS and the "internet of traceability"

GS1 positions GS1 Digital Link and EPCIS 2.0 together as enabling an "internet of traceability" where each product carries a URL-based identifier (GS1 Digital Link) that resolves to digital traceability event data captured via EPCIS (GS1, 2023-11-24 YouTube webinar). In ecommerce delivery specifically, nShift (delivery management platform) states that "standards like GS1 EPCIS give teams a practical way to make event truth reusable across carriers and systems" — covering standardising delivery promises, normalising tracking events across carriers, and making returns proof visible through to refund (nShift, 2026).

Multi-tier supplier traceability

Tracex Technologies states that EPCIS provides "a common data model and vocabulary that allows suppliers, manufacturers, logistics providers, and retailers to exchange traceability data without costly custom integrations" and extends traceability across Tier-2 and Tier-3 suppliers by linking events from multiple organisations into a single, connected lifecycle view (Tracex Technologies, undated).

Lot/batch and serial tracking in ecommerce fulfilment

Lot tracking enables a company to reconstruct the full history of a product — which raw materials went in, what operations took place, where raw materials and finished goods were stored, and who the end purchasing customers were — supporting recalls and compliance audits (Datacor, 2026). In ecommerce fulfilment, lot tracking enables FEFO (First Expired, First Out) picking logic, automated expiry checks at dispatch, and audit-ready lot genealogy for regulatory recalls (Everstox, undated).

Serial number tracking extends traceability to the individual unit, enabling precise product authentication, warranty management, and return fraud prevention in ecommerce fulfilment (The Retail Exec, undated).

Technology stack

Track and Trace Solutions (2026) describes the traceability stack as: "not a single product you can buy — it's a stack of identifiers, capture technologies, event stores, and integrations chosen to fit your industry, your trading partners, and the regulators you answer to." Three capability layers identified in fashion/clothing supply chain transparency (PatSnap Eureka, 2026):

  1. Data capture — IoT sensors, RFID, NFC, physical tracking, 2D barcodes
  2. Data integrity and sharing — blockchain/DLT, smart contracts, EPCIS event stores
  3. Data interpretation — digital twins, AI analytics, DPP platforms

RFID and NFC in fashion traceability

Luxury and premium fashion brands are embedding NFC chips in garment labels, shoe tongues, and handbag linings so consumers can tap to verify product authenticity instantly (CPCON Group, 2026). Some fashion brands are combining RFID/NFC with blockchain to create an immutable record of a garment's journey — each event (fabric sourcing, cutting, sewing, QC, shipping, retail receipt) recorded on a distributed ledger linked to the garment's RFID tag (TheIndustry.fashion, undated).

The NFC clothing market was reported at approximately USD 1.2 billion (as-of 2026), with projections of USD 4.5 billion by 2033 at a ~16.5% CAGR (RFIDTag.com, 2026 — vendor/aggregator source; methodology unclear; treat as indicative only).

GS1 Sunrise 2027 — 2D barcode transition

GS1's GS1 Sunrise initiative sets a global goal for all retail checkout systems to be able to read 2D codes (QR codes, GS1 DataMatrix) alongside EAN/UPC barcodes by end of 2027; pilots are underway in 48 countries representing 88% of world GDP (GS1 US, as-of 2025). 2D barcodes can encode product identification plus lot numbers, expiration dates, serial numbers, and GS1 Digital Link URLs in the same scan — transforming what a single barcode lookup can return from a product type to a specific production batch or even a single serialised unit (barcodeetiketten.com, 2025).

From 2028 onwards, manufacturers will have the freedom to choose whether to mark products with a 1D barcode, a 2D code, or both; the classic EAN barcode will not be abolished (barcodeetiketten.com, 2025).

Regulatory drivers

EU ESPR / Digital Product Passport (DPP)

The EU ESPR (Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation), which entered into force in July 2024, mandates a Digital Product Passport (DPP) — a mandatory digital identity for products sold in the EU, accessible by scanning a QR code, NFC tag, or RFID chip (Reconomy, 2026-02-23). GS1 has published a DPP Provisional Standard positioning GS1 Digital Link and EPCIS as the interoperability and event-data layer underpinning EU DPP compliance (GS1, current — provisional standard; as-of 2026-07-22).

A joint position paper from GS1 and the RAIN Alliance identifies textiles, tyres, and furniture as the first ESPR Working Plan 2025–2030 sectors where combined RAIN RFID and GS1 identifiers will be applied for DPPs (RAIN Alliance, undated).

The EU central DPP Registry went live approximately July 20, 2026 (as-of 2026-07-22). Under ESPR and related due-diligence rules, brands must provide "traceable, auditable evidence of where and how materials were processed — not just supplier assurances" (Tracex Technologies, 2025–2026). The ESPR ban on destruction of unsold clothing, accessories, and footwear took effect July 19, 2026 for large enterprises, and applies to medium enterprises from 2030 (Portugal Clothing Factory, 2026).

The JRC published the first complete specification of DPP content for textile apparel on 13 May 2026: 49 data points across 4 categories (fairlymade.com citing JRC primary, 2026).

Phased ESPR implementation runs 2026–2030 across batteries (first), then textiles, electronics, iron/steel/aluminium, furniture, tyres, detergents, paints, lubricants, and chemicals (Reconomy, 2026-02-23).

EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)

The EUDR requires that coffee, cocoa, soy, timber, palm oil, rubber, and derived products be deforestation-free and fully traceable — including geolocation data for production plots — before being placed on or exported from the EU market (Assent, 2026). Current deadline: December 30, 2026 for large operators and traders; June 30, 2027 for micro and small enterprises (as-of 2026-07-22) (PSQR, 2026; HQTS, 2026). EPCIS 2.0 is cited as one of the data-sharing mechanisms for EUDR compliance (qrstuff.com, undated — secondary source only).

US FDA FSMA Section 204 (Food Traceability Rule)

FSMA Section 204 requires businesses handling foods on the FDA Food Traceability List to maintain electronic records of Key Data Elements (KDEs) at every Critical Tracking Event (CTE) and make them available to FDA within 24 hours (FDA, rule finalised 2022). The FDA extended the compliance deadline from January 20, 2026 to July 20, 2028 via the Continuing Appropriations Act of 2026 (Federal Register, 2025-08-07 — authoritative).

Walmart private mandate (US food suppliers)

Walmart's own food traceability requirement — requiring ASN (EDI 856) with KDE data, SSCC-18 pallet labels, and GS1-128 case labels (encoding GTIN, lot code, expiry date, quantity) — took effect August 1, 2025, with chargebacks assessed for non-compliant shipments (Walmart Enablement, as-of 2025-08-01). This mandate is independent of the federal FSMA 204 deadline (Supply Pike, undated).

What practitioners report

TradeBeyond's 2026 Retail Supply Chain report lists traceability as one of eight trends redefining retail supply chains, noting that "companies with real-time, end-to-end visibility are twice as likely to prevent disruption" (as-of 2026) (TradeBeyond, 2026 — methodology of the statistic not detailed in source; treat as indicative only).

nShift identifies fragmented event data across markets, carriers, and handovers as the core barrier to meeting 2026 consumer expectations of consistent delivery visibility (nShift, 2026).
